Chelation and Detoxification Therapy in St Petersburg and Tampa

Anne Hermann, MD

Chelation is a therapy that helps rid the body of heavy metals such as lead, mercury and aluminum.

Symptoms of metal toxicity include: headaches, dizziness, tingling of the hands or feet, digestive issues and fatigue.  Of course, these symptoms can be caused by other medical issues such as thyroid disease or vitamin deficiencies.  For this reason, we usually review your medical records prior to checking for medal toxicities.

Different tests for heavy metal toxicity include bloodwork, urine or hair samples.  Standard bloodwork is not as effective at detecting metal levels as urine testing, however, it is often the least expensive test.  If you have an elevated level of any metal, we will council you on how to avoid further exposure to that metal.  We find mercury is one of the most commonly elevated metal levels.  It is found in large mouthed fish that eat other fish, such as grouper, snapper, tuna and swordfish.  It may be found in dental fillings as well.  Other common metal exposure comes from water pipes, paint, canned food and work related exposures.

If your level is high enough, I recommend Detoxamin.  This is a physician grade chelating agent that is administered rectally.

Cost of Dysport in Tampa and St Petersburg

Anne Hermann, MD

Many patients use Dysport because it is priced better and they get the same benefit as they would from Botox.  Dysport is made by the makers of Restylane and has been FDA approved for treatment of fine lines in the US for over three years.  I would like to explain how Dysport can be priced at only $4.50 per unit, while Botox is $10 to $12 per unit (depending on how much you receive).

Dysport dosing is double that of Botox.  For example, if I use 20 units of Botox the same treatment with Dysport would be 40 units.  So, Dysport is not really half the price of Botox.  It is more like 15 to 20 % less than Botox.  When treatments cost $200 or more, this can still amount to significant savings.

What is Belotero Balance? Offices Tampa and St Petersburg, FL

Anne Hermann, MD

Belotero Balance is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler.  It is very similar to Juvederm and Restylane as they all have the same active ingredient, hyaluronic acid.  The difference is that Belotero Balance can be injected much closer to the surface of the skin.

Juvederm and Restylane cannot be injected as close to the surface of the skin as Belotero Balance because they leave discoloration if they are injected too superficially.  So, Belotero Balance allows the doctor to erase fine lines and wrinkles that we were not able to inject in the past with the older fillers.

I am finding that patients are very happy with Belotero Balance for lip lines or “smoker’s lines”, crows feet lines and other fine lines.  To watch a video of how dermal filler injections are performed, click this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCWJ6MpYULw&feature=player_embedded

Allergy Drops in Tampa and St Pete

August 1, 2012, the Wall Street Journal published an article on sublingual immunotherapy. We have been offering allergy drops, or sublingual immunotherapy, for years. The journal article did a good job describing what science knows about the drops:

1. The drops are made of the same liquid used in the shots. While the liquid is FDA approved, taking it by mouth is an off label but very effective means of taking the liquid.

2. Drops are as effective as the shots

3. Drops are much more convenient as they can be done at home. Patients who get allergy shots, must go to the doctor once or twice per week for injections.

4. Drops are safer than shots because there is less risk of severe allergic reaction.

5. Millions of doses of drops have been given worldwide, with no deaths.

6. Cost is similar with allergy drops as shots because while the drops are not covered by insurance, they still are less than the cost of all the doctor visits required for shots.

So, if you suffer from allergies and do not want weekly shots, this is the best way to go. For more information, see our blog allergy testing: http://www.doctorhermann.com/blog/bid/129091/How-to-Treat-Food-Allergies-in-the-Tampa-St-Pete-Area

Cost of Botox vs Dysport in Tampa St Petersburg, FL

Dysport and Botox work the same way and both last 3 to 4 months. Dysport was approved for treatment of fine lines and wrinkles in 2009 and was the first FDA approved competitor to Botox in the United States.

If Dysport and Botox both work the same, why use Dysport?  http://www.doctorhermann.com/blog/bid/128366/Botox-vs-Dysport-Which-Treatment-is-Right-For-You  For most people who choose Dysport over Botox, it is because they get the same results for 10 to 20% less than Botox.  We charge, $4.50 per unit for Dysport and $10 to $11 per unit for Botox, depending on how much the patient gets.  Some examples of the price break are:

  • Forehead wrinkles (10 units) with Dysport $90 vs Botox $110 for $20 savings
  • Brow or frown lines (23 units) with Dysport $207 vs Botox $253 for $46 savings
  • Crows feet (20 units) Dsyport $180 vs Botox $220 for $40 savings
  • If some have all of these areas treated, the savings are $106.

I offer Dysport as a good alternative to Botox.  It is well proven to be equally effective at a better cost.
