Rejuvenation can be achieved by addressing three components. The first is Volume which can be achieved with different types of fillers, fat transplant, and/or surgery. The second is Texture. Texture can be improved by toxins, chemical peels, lasers, topicals, microdermabrasion and/or micro-needling. Lastly is skin Tone. Procedures to help with tone and color are chemical peels, cryotherapy, lasers, topicals and intense pulse light (IPL).

Today we are going to review ways to decrease or increase Volume. Volume can be decreased beneath the chin with using Kybella. Kybella is a synthetic deoxycholic acid a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat under the chin it destroys fat cells decreasing the fullness under the chin. Once these fat cells are destroyed, they can no longer store or accumulate fat, so further treatment is not expected once you reach your desired effect, which can take one to six treatments. Other ways to reduce volume throughout the body is diet, cool sculpting, liposuction, etc. As we age we naturally lose fat in some areas and gain in others.

To increase volume in areas we lose fat that may not appear as youthful like the face and/or hands we can use dermal fillers. Some are reversible others are not and some are semi-permanent. Dermal fillers help to diminish facial lines and restore volume and fullness in the face by plumping thin lips, volumizing shallow contours, softening facial creases and wrinkles. Most last 6 months to 2 years. Dermal fillers most commonly used are Juvederm, Voluma, Restylane, Radiesse, and Belotero. The selection of a dermal filler is based on your desires and area being improved. Other procedures to increase volume are Sculptra, implants, fat transplant, etc.  For some patients, surgery such as a facelift, brow lift, or eye lift may be the best approach. Non-surgical rejuvenation treatments, like dermal fillers, cannot achieve the same results as surgery. However, dermal fillers may help delay the time before a facelift becomes appropriate or surgery is not an option.
