Optifast Diet Program

Optifast is a clinically proven weight management program offered at our weight loss clinic. The Optifast program is a full liquid meal replacement diet, restricting food options for a limited time. This is known as stimuli narrowing and provides the scientific rationale for a full meal replacement diet. Typical caloric intake during the 12 weeks of the program is 800-1200 calories per day. The Optifast formulas provide 100% of the daily recommended value of vitamins and minerals. Because the program is medically guided, participants are monitored at least bi-weekly during the program. Two years after program completion, 1 out of 4 patients maintained 75% of their weight loss. Five years after program completion, 50% of patients maintained medically significant weight loss.

Dr. Anne Hermann, a holistic internal medicine physician, offers the Optifast diet program to her patients.  Dr. Hermann is also board certified in nutrition.  Offices are maintained in Tampa and Saint Petersburg Beach, Florida.  Please call (813) 902-9559 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Autumn Leaves Can Lead To Mold Allergies

Leaves left on the ground during the fall season decompose and allow mold spores to grow. These spores then become airborne and can trigger sinus problems, asthma symptoms and swelling around the eyes. Climate change and super storms are causing mold counts to climb higher and linger for longer. According to The New England Journal of Medicine, rising counts of the mold Alternaria have been directly linked to asthma exacerbations. Another type of mold called Aspergillis is also a common cause of allergic sinusitis and asthma symptoms. Allergy skin testing can determine if mold is a trigger for symptoms that patients may be experiencing. If the testing comes back positive, allergy immunotherapy utilizing sublingual drops may effectively eradicate negative symptoms.

Dr. Anne Herman offers allergy testing and sublingual immunotherapy to her patients. Offices are maintained in Tampa and Saint Petersburg Beach, Florida. Please contact the office at (813) 902-9559 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Celiac Disease Testing

Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition in which the lining of the small intestine is damaged from eating foods that contain gluten.  It affects approximately 1% of the population.  Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley.  When a person with celiac disease eats gluten, their body responds by creating antibodies that attack the small intestine.  Thus, nutrients that are eaten are not absorbed.  Celiac is a hereditary disease, and is common among first degree relatives.  Left untreated, individuals with celiac disease are at a higher risk to develop other autoimmune conditions such as multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, and anemia.  Once diagnosed with celiac, a strict gluten free diet must be followed.

Dr. Anne Hermann, a holistic internal medicine physician in Tampa and Saint Petersburg Beach Florida, offers non-invasive celiac testing to her patients.  Dr. Hermann is also board certified in nutrition.   Comprehensive vitamin testing is another offered service, many individuals with celiac suffer from vitamin insufficiency/deficiency.  Please call the office at 813-92-9559 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Gluten Sensitivity

Dr. Anne Hermann, a holistic internal medicine physician in Tampa and Saint Petersburg Beach, Florida offers testing and treatment for gluten sensitivity.  Dr. Hermann is also board certified in nutrition.  Please call the office at (813) 902-9559 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

How Can Sublingual Allergy Therapy Help Me?

Allergies occur when your body perceives irritants such as dust, molds, or pollens as threats and an immune response is launched.  Reactions can include sneezing, runny nose, skin rashes, and wheezing.  Prescription and over-the-counter medications can alleviate symptoms, but do not relieve the causes of the allergies.  Immunotherapy, which includes sublingual (under the tongue) allergy therapy, desensitizes your body to these irritants or antigens.   Very small doses are introduced to your body via serum.  As treatment progresses the concentration of antigens in the serum increases.  Thus  your immune system learns to ignore the antigen.

Sublingual therapy has been popular throughout the world for over 50 years, and is now becoming popular in the United States.  The serum that you place under your tongue is the same serum that is used in allergy shots.  Within a few months, you should realize a significant reduction in the need for allergy medications.  By the end of four years of sublingual therapy use, your environmental allergies should be in remission!

Dr. Anne Hermann, a holistic internal medicine physician, offers sublingual allergy therapy to her patients.  Locations are maintained in Tampa and Saint Petersburg Beach, Florida.  Please call the office at (813) 902-9559 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

What Is Mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy is the use of injections directly into the mesoderm for localized fat reduction and treatment of cellulite. The mesoderm describes tissue such as fat, cartilage, muscle and bone. This therapy has been used for many years in Europe and South America, and is now becoming popular in the United States. The injections are well tolerated and have minimal side effects with no down time. Acceptable treatment areas include the chin, arms, abdomen, thighs, saddlebags, flanks and love handles. Typically, a high protein/low fat diet is recommended in conjunction with mesotherapy treatments for better results.

Dr. Anne Hermann, a holistic internal medicine physician, maintains offices in Tampa and Saint Petersburg Beach, Florida. Dr. Hermann is also board certified in nutrition. Please call the office at (813) 902-9559 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Laser Therapy For Skin Rejuvenation

Advanced skin rejuvenation utilizes an intense pulsed light (IPL) procedure that is non-invasive.  Skin is neither removed nor damaged, thus there is no recovery or down time.  The pulsed light destroys unwanted blood vessels and pigmented areas without harming normal skin.  This laser therapy also “plumps” collagen creating smoother skin and less fine lines.  Most patients will feel minimal discomfort during the procedure, and the treated area may feel like you have a very mild sunburn.  Pigmented areas will actually appear darker after treatment, and will then flake off in 3-10 days.  Blood vessels may fade immediately after treatment, or within a few days.  Skin smoothing and fine line reduction will be noted between weeks 9-12 of treatment.  The usual duration of advanced skin rejuvenation is 30 minutes depending on the size of the treatment area.  Often, 2-6 treatments are necessary.  However, this number may vary based on your skin type and condition being treated.

Dr. Anne Hermann, a holistic internal medicine physician, is pleased to offer IPL therapy to her patients.    Offices are maintained in Tampa and Saint Petersburg Beach, Florida.  Please call the office at (813) 902-9559 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Accent Skin Tightening System

Accent is a FDA approved non-invasive treatment for wrinkles and sagging loose skin. It is a controlled heat therapy that utilizes radio frequency to heat your skin’s inner layer. This energy stimulates your cells to produce new collagen. In turn, your skin will appear more youthful and smooth. However, it does not reduce volume. Usually, three to six treatments at two week intervals will be required.
Accent can be used to treat loose, wrinkled skin anywhere on the body – including the face, neck, arms and legs. It is also safe and effective for a postnatal or post-surgical abdomen, buttocks or thighs. The procedure is virtually pain free, and is often described as a warm massage. There is no recovery time.
Dr. Anne Hermann, a holistic internal medicine physician, has been offering the Accent system to her patients for over five years. Dr. Hermann maintains offices in Tampa and Saint Petersburg Beach, Florida. Please contact the office at (813) 902-9559 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

What Is Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation?

Cranial electrotherapy was approved in 1979 by the FDA for treatment of insomnia, anxiety and depression.  It is a prescriptive noninvasive electro-medical therapy.  Treatment consists of a medical device which sends pulsed weak electric currents to the brain via electrodes.  The electrodes are placed on the ear lobes, temples and maxilla-occipital junction.  Side effects are rare and include vertigo, headache and skin sensitivity.  Treatment efficacy is cumulative, but most patients will show some improvement after the first treatment.  It is safe to use with other modalities such as medications, psychotherapy and bio-feedback.  Cranial electrotherapy is cost-effective and is easy to use both in the clinical setting and in the patient’s home.

Dr. Anne Hermann, a holistic internal medicine physician, offers cranial electrotherapy to her patients.  Offices are located in Tampa and Saint Petersburg Beach, Florida.  Please contact the office at (813) 902-9559 for more information or to schedule an appointment.
