What Can Dermal Fillers Do for Me and Which One Should I Use?

Many factors contribute to facial wrinkles such as aging, bone loss, sun exposure, smoking and even years of muscle movement. The good news is that this can be improved with a number of facial fillers also known as injectables or dermal fillers that can provide temporary to long-lasting solutions to maintain a youthful and more beautiful appearance. Some are afraid of such treatments because they are not knowledgeable or afraid to look fake, scared of discomfort or downtime.  There are many reasons, but people should not be afraid of this wonderful low risk treatment.

Fillers are administered through tiny injections targeting specific areas of the face to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, sagging appearing skin, lip augmentation, hand crappiness, ear lobe drooping and even minimize hollowness under the eyes. There is little to no downtime depending on the type of filler and your skin reaction. Most common skin reactions are possible bruising and swelling that last from a day to at most a week. With a variety of filler options available, one may wonder how to determine which filler to use. This is where picking a qualified provider is important. The first step is to consult with an experienced provider who can work with you to determine the best choice of filler for you.

The following are the most common temporary fillers used in the United States in our office:

Juvederm Ultra and Ultra Plus are hyaluronic acid fillers. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the body and can be reversed, if needed. Juvederm corrects moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles. Juvaderm is frequently used in nasolabial folds, marionettes, jaw line, lips, earlobes and cheeks. Results last up to 12 months.

Voluma is a reversible cross linked hyaluronic acid filler allowing it to integrate and support existing collagen. Voluma adds structure and volume to moderate to deep facial wrinkles and folds. This is a great product for the cheeks but can be used in nasolabial folds, marionettes, jaw line and hands. Voluma injections offer immediate results that last up to 24 months.

Vollure is a hyaluronic acid filler similar to Juvederm but has vycross technology making it a softer and more integrative. This reversible dermal filler treats mild to moderate folds and wrinkles such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines. Vollure last up to 18 months, a little longer than similar dermal fillers.

Volbella is a hyaluronic acid filler that comes in a 0.5cc syringe, which is approximately ½ of a syringe of most dermal fillers, therefore, useful to those clients who need a smaller amount. Volbella is best used in areas such as the lips, vertical lip lines or under eyes where less volume correction is needed. Volbella typically last 9 to 12 months approximately 3 to 6 months longer than previous dermal fillers of its kind.

Bellotero is a thin reversible hyaluronic acid filler that adds minimal volume to the lips, vertical lip lines and circles under the eyes. Bellotero is great for those delicate areas that need a little correction. Bellotero typically last 6 to 12 months.

Restalyne Silk is a soft tissue hyaluronic acid reversible dermal filler that adds volume to the lips, vertical lip lines and hollows beneath the eyes. It’s also used to correct mild facial wrinkles. Typically lasting 6 to 12 months.

Restalyne is a reversible hyaluronic acid that restores fullness to the skin. Restalyne is a dermal filler that treats mild to moderate wrinkles such as nasolabial folds, marionettes, lips and ear lobes. Restalyne injections typically last up to 12 months.

Radiesse is non-reversible dermal filler that consists of calcium-based microspheres that support and stimulate growth of the body’s own collagen. Radiesse is often used to fill nasolabial folds, marionettes, jaw line, cheeks and hands. Results are immediate and usually last 18 to 24 months.

Sculptra, another very long-lasting non-reversible soft tissue facial filler, triggers the body to produce its own collagen to fill lines and wrinkles over time. Typical treatment consists of one to three sessions over several months to rejuvenate areas of the face where fat and bone volume are decreasing because of the aging process. Unlike other dermal fillers, results are not seen immediately. Sculptra is commonly used on the cheekbones, along the jawline, beneath the eyes, the nasolabial folds, temples and around the mouth. Sculptra results are very natural and last up to 24 months.
