Guide to Lip Flips

Fuller lips are a common cosmetic goal among patients. Since lips are naturally fuller at a younger age, full lips are indicative of youth and considered conventionally attractive. For this reason, many cosmetic treatments for fuller, plumper lips have been developed, including the Botox “lip flip.”

What Is the Lip Flip?

The lip flip is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment that uses Botox injections to give the lips a fuller look. This in-office procedure involves the administration of Botox into the cupid’s bow and corners of the mouth. Completed in just 10 to 20 minutes, the lip flip is a quick, convenient, and safe way to enhance the appearance of the lips.

Botox is the name for a toxin called Botulinum toxin type A. This toxin blocks the targeted nerves in the treatment area, which prevents muscle contractions in that area. In the lip flip procedure, the Botox injections cause the muscles around the lip to relax. As these muscles relax, the portion of the upper lip that on the inside of the mouth turns up and out. This makes the lip appear fuller and plumper.

Results of the Lip Flip

It’s important for patients to understand that the lip flip doesn’t provide comparable results to other cosmetic lip treatments, namely lip fillers. Rather than plumping your lips with a hyaluronic acid formula, the lip flip simply causes the hidden part of the upper lip to become visible. This can make the lips appear larger and cover more of your gums when you smile.

The results of the lip flip don’t last as long as that of lip fillers. While lip fillers can last for 6 to 12 months, the lip flip only lasts for 2 to 3 months. This makes the lip flip a great choice for patients who want a shorter-term procedure or for those who want a more subtle change to the appearance of their lips.
