What You Need to Know About Upneeq

If you suffer from ptosis, you know that it can make you appear fatigued, even after a full night’s sleep. This condition develops when the upper eyelids droop downward, often obstructing part of the eyes. While ptosis can result from injuries or underlying medical conditions, it often occurs as a result of the natural aging process.

Upneeq is an FDA-approved, once-daily prescription eyedrop that’s specifically formulated to treat ptosis. Here, we’ll answer all of the most common questions about Upneeq and how it may help you achieve lifted eyelids and a rested appearance.

What is Upneeq?

Upneeq is a once-daily prescription eye drop that was approved by the FDA to treat acquired blepharoptosis. Acquired blepharoptosis develops gradually – it’s not present at birth. Most often, it develops when the levator muscles, which lift the eyelids, stretch and weaken with age.

How Does Upneeq Work?

The active ingredient in Upneeq is 0.1% oxymetazoline hydrochloride. This is a type of alpha agonist, the class of drugs that spur muscle contraction and vasoconstriction. When Upneeq is administered to the eyes, it causes the Muller’s muscles to contract.

The Muller’s muscle keeps the eyelid in an elevated position, and when it contracts in patients with ptosis, it elevates the eyelids. This can also restore the patient’s field of vision and give the eyes a rested appearance.

Does Upneeq Have Side Effects?

When it’s used as directed, Upneeq has been found to be a safe and effective treatment for acquired blepharoptosis. However, in clinical trials, a small percentage of patients experienced the following side effects:

  • Eye redness, irritation, and/or inflammation
  • Blurry vision
  • Dry eye
  • Pain at the instillation site
  • Headache

How Long Does Upneeq Take to Work?

Upneeq begins working within minutes, with some patients experiencing a noticeable lift within just five minutes. In most cases, patients notice the effects of Upneeq within two hours of administering the drops. These effects generally last for around six hours. However, the drops should only be used once daily.
